Chapter 14

Trish and Kara ranged slightly ahead of Alex as the three picked their way carefully through the collapsed remains of town. Although he’d lived there all his life, without any recognizable landmarks to navigate by, Alex had no idea where he actually was. Fortunately, Kara and Trish had already worked their way through the area, so they didn’t have any trouble finding a path around the debris. After traveling for a while among the rubble, Trish called a halt before guiding them into a concealed hollow inside one of the ruins.

“We’re close enough now,” she explained. “But I want to wait a while before trying to sneak inside their camp. Once most of them are asleep, we’ll go in, and you can head back.”

It seemed like a reasonable precaution to Alex; it would be far safer to try and slip past whatever security the gang had in place after most of them were in bed for the night, so he settled in to wait until it was time for the sisters to move in.

It didn’t take long for the night to grow completely dark. Without the lampposts and other forms of illumination that typically rendered the streets of town bright as day, the eerie blackness of night was even more disconcerting than it had been back at Nate’s cabin where such absolute darkness had been expected. Yet despite the almost total absence of light, Alex was still able to observe his surroundings with complete clarity thanks to his superior vision.

With nighttime fully upon them, Kara headed out first, apparently scouting ahead while Trish remained behind with Alex for a moment. He was about to wish her well before heading back to where Steph and Jen were waiting for him when she grabbed hold of him, unexpectedly pulling Alex into an embrace.

She held on to him for a while, and Alex felt the heat of Trish’s body pressing against him while the faint scent of her filled his nostrils. Laced with cloying traces of a pleasant earthiness, Alex found himself drawn to her almost instinctively, despite how wrong he knew that attraction to be.

“I may not be coming back from this,” Trish drew back only slightly, her arms still wrapped tightly around Alex’s waist before brushing her lips against his in a soft kiss.

“No,” Alex pushed her away as soon as his surprise wore off.

Trish was obviously startled by his rejection, yet she quickly composed herself before she replied.

“You love her, I know,” Trish’s disappointment was perfectly clear. “I just needed to do that; I hope you understand.”

Alex certainly did understand. Their world had become a brutal place where death lurked around every corner, and the only comfort any of them had was each other. Had things been different, if he hadn’t found Jen again, Alex could easily imagine himself falling in love with Trish. But that wasn’t going to happen now; he’d made the only choice he could once he knew Jen still cared for him, and Alex needed to make that perfectly clear before Trish tried to take things any further.
